A new Quinnipiac University national poll shows voters have grown more negative about U.S. military action against Iran, the possible length of the conflict and President Donald Trump’s handling of the situation.
According to the poll, 34% of registered voters support U.S. military action against Iran, while 60% oppose it. Quinnipiac said that marks the lowest level of support and the highest level of opposition since the university began asking the question in early March, after the U.S.-Iran war began.
The poll found Democrats oppose the military action 89% to 5%, while independents oppose it 69% to 26%. Republicans support the military action 74% to 19%.
Voters were more unified on the question of ground troops, with 74% opposing sending U.S. ground troops into Iran and 19% supporting it.
A majority of voters, 55%, said they believe U.S. military action against Iran will last about a year or longer. That includes 20% who said they think it will last about a year and 35% who said they think it will last longer.
The pushback is evident. Six in 10 voters want no part of military action against Iran,” said Tim Malloy, Quinnipiac University polling analyst. “More than seven in 10 say putting troops on Iranian soil is a no-go. And if the war drags on, more than half of voters predict it will last a year or more.
The poll also found 54% of voters said they do not think the United States is winning the war with Iran, while 36% said they think the U.S. is winning.
Nearly two-thirds of voters, 66%, said the war with Iran has not been worth fighting when weighing the costs and benefits to the United States. Thirty-one percent said it has been worth fighting.
The poll also asked voters about Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who Quinnipiac said are serving as the Trump administration’s envoys in efforts to negotiate an end to the Iran war. Thirty-nine percent of voters said they have a lot or some confidence in them as negotiators, while 57% said they have not much confidence or none at all.
Trump’s overall job approval rating was 32%, with 58% disapproving. Quinnipiac said that is Trump’s lowest approval rating in a Quinnipiac University poll.
On specific issues, voters gave Trump the following approval ratings:
- Immigration issues: 40%
- Trade: 37%
- The economy: 34%
- Foreign policy: 34%
- The situation with Iran: 28%
The poll also found 68% of voters said Trump is not focused enough on addressing the problems most Americans are facing, while 29% said he is focused enough.
On the economy, 28% of voters described the nation’s economy as excellent or good, while 71% described it as not so good or poor. Fifty-nine percent said they think the economy is getting worse, and 49% said they are worse off financially than they were a year ago.
Quinnipiac also found that 88% of voters believe inflation is either a very serious or somewhat serious problem.
Looking ahead to the midterm elections, 48% of voters said they would want Democrats to win control of the U.S. House if the election were held today, while 41% said they would want Republicans to win control. Nearly half of voters, 48%, said they are more motivated to vote in this year’s midterm elections than in past midterms.
The poll surveyed 963 self-identified registered voters nationwide from July 23-27 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points, including the design effect.
