Ghana manager Carlos Queiroz has stated that he would be the first to resign should it be a solution, following the Black Stars’ disappointing start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Ghana’s Nightmare Start to AFCON Qualifiers

The Portuguese tactician was re-appointed as the national team’s head coach earlier this month, after he led them to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Now, their run to qualify for the continental showpiece next year has begun on the wrong foot, with the side sitting winless and rock bottom of Group C after two matches.

Ghana opened their campaign away against West African rivals Cote d’Ivoire, suffering a 2-0 defeat that set a challenging tone for the group stage.

Returning to the Accra Sports Stadium for Matchday 2, the Black Stars squandered a promising two-goal lead to crash to a stunning 4-2 defeat against Gambia.

Ernest Nuamah opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 27th minute, and Felix Afena-Gyan doubled the advantage shortly after, but a resilient Gambia side fought back fiercely, netting four goals to secure all three points and leave Ghana rooted to the bottom of the group.

Carlos Queiroz on His Future as Ghana Coach

Speaking after the encounter, Queiroz acknowledged the frustration but insisted that the decision on his future lies with the Ghana Football Association.

“After a result like this, it is easy to say the coach should resign. But that is the decision for the GFA to analyse and decide to stick with me or not,” Queiroz said, per GhanaSoccernet.

“If my resignation will be the solution for Ghana football, I’d be the first one to resign. But this is a decision I’ll leave for the federation,” he added.
