Pyramids FC star Youssef Obama stated that his side wants to win the league, while also opening up on the position Rulani Mokwena wants him to play after recording a dominant victory in the South African’s first competitive game in charge.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns boss got his tenure in Egypt off to a flying start with an emphatic 3-0 away victory over Ghazl El Mahalla SC on opening day of the 2026/27 Egyptian Premier League season.

Jordanian winger Odeh Fakhoury broke the deadlock shortly before half-time, pouncing to score Mokwena’s first official goal in charge.

Playmaker Nasser Maher extended the advantage past the hour mark with a clinical finish to put Pyramids in total control, before right-winger Mahmoud Zalaka latched onto an assist from Mohamed Chibi to make it three and compound the hosts’ misery.

Youssef Obama on Mokwena’s Instructions

Speaking to ON Sport after the match, Obama said, “Congratulations to Pyramids and everyone associated with them. Thank God for the good performance; this is an excellent start for us,” he said, per Al Saudi News.

“I wouldn’t have won the Man of the Match award without the heroes around me on the field, so I thank them.”

Regarding his performance and new position, Obama revealed Mokwena’s instructions.

“The coach believes that I am good at playing as a pure striker while dropping back a little to help my teammates, and that is what I am trying to do,” he explained.

Obama concluded by emphasising the team’s ambition. “Pyramids is a championship-winning club.

“We want to win the league; this will make all the difference for us as players, and God willing, we will achieve the title through our dedication and hard work.”
