PUL Pays Tribute to Fallen Journalists Zayzay, Paykoo | News

The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has paid tribute to two deceased journalists, honoring their longstanding contributions to journalism and the development of the Liberian media landscape.

The Union recognized the professional legacy of Daniel Zayzay, Station Manager of Peace FM in Harbel, Margibi County, who passed away on 25 May 2025 at the age of 42 following a brief illness. He served in journalism for nearly two decades, earning respect for his dedication and commitment to community broadcasting.

The PUL also honored James Paykoo, a retired broadcaster who died on 7 June 2026 at the age of 69 after a prolonged illness. With more than 30 years in journalism, he was widely admired as a seasoned newscaster known for his rich, commanding voice and professionalism.

Between 14 and 15 June 2026, a PUL delegation led by President Julius Kanubah visited the bereaved families in Paynesville and Harbel to extend condolences and demonstrate solidarity on behalf of the media community.

The delegation to the Paykoo family included journalists Solo Urias Lewis and Jutonu Kollie, while the visit to the Zayzay family comprised Solo Urias Lewis, Howison Woah, Ebenezer Foley, and Emmanuel Lloyd.

Families of the deceased expressed appreciation to the PUL for recognizing the professional contributions of their loved ones and for standing with them during their time of grief.

In honor of Journalist Zayzay’s legacy, the PUL announced that it will open a book of condolence on Friday, 19 June 2026, at Peace FM in Harbel, Margibi County, beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The Press Union of Liberia has also released funeral arrangements for both journalists. The wake-keeping for Journalist Daniel Zayzay will be held on Friday, 19 June 2026 in Harbel, Margibi County, followed by his funeral service on Saturday, 20 June 2026, also in Harbel. The funeral service for Journalist James Paykoo will take place on Thursday, 25 June 2026 in Paynesville, Montserrado County.

The Press Union of Liberia is calling on journalists, media professionals, communication practitioners, and members of the public to join the bereaved families in honoring the memory of the fallen journalists and giving them a dignified farewell.
