With his loan spell in Saudi Arabia now over and uncertainty continuing to surround his future at Tunisian giants Esperance de Tunis, indications are growing that the speedy winger could make a return to Gauteng in the upcoming transfer window.

The former Sekhukhune United star recently arrived back in Johannesburg for his off-season break after spending the campaign on loan at Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hazem. However, according to information gathered by the Siya crew, his trip back home may not only be about rest and recovery.

Sources close to the player have hinted that Gauteng-based clubs are already circling, with Mokwana’s situation being monitored closely ahead of the new season.

“Elias is back in Gauteng and there’s strong talk that he could remain here permanently depending on how things unfold,” a source told Soccer Laduma.

“There are at least two clubs from Gauteng that have made enquiries about him. Nothing has been finalised yet, but there is serious interest.”

While Mokwana still has a year remaining on his contract with Esperance, insiders claim there has been little communication from the Tunisian side regarding where the player fits into their plans for next season — something that could potentially open the door for a move away.

“At the moment there hasn’t been much clarity from Esperance. That uncertainty is what is making local clubs believe there could be an opportunity to bring him back to the PSL,” the insider added.

Mokwana’s future has already sparked speculation in local football circles before. Before his move to Tunisia, Kaizer Chiefs were believed to have shown strong interest in the winger, although a transfer never materialised.

Now, with the 26-year-old back on South African soil and his long-term future still unresolved, speculation around a possible PSL return is beginning to gather momentum.

The Bafana Bafana international endured a mixed spell in Saudi Arabia, making 24 appearances for Al-Hazem while contributing one goal and three assists during the recently concluded season.

Despite being part of South Africa’s Africa Cup of Nations squad in Morocco, Mokwana has since fallen out of the travelling squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding even more intrigue to what could become one of the more closely watched transfer situations in the coming weeks.
