Pope calls on Our Lady of Africa for Spain-Morocco crisis
Pope Leo XIV prays for “peace, stability, and justice” in the midst of the humanitarian and political emergency, saying he is following the “alarming situation” closely.
As the situation in Ceuta, the Spanish autonomous city on the northern coast of Africa (see map below), continues to generate tension, Pope Leo called for the intercession of Our Lady of Africa.
Between July 30 and 31, up to 60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta — by swimming or walking along the El Tarajal breakwater. Several dozen died in the attempt or aftermath.

Juan Jesús Vivas, Ceuta’s president, called it “a situation of absolute humanitarian and social emergency.”
I am following with concern the alarming situation in Ceuta, praying to God that, through the intercession of Our Lady of Africa, solutions may be found to bring peace, stability, and justice.
The Pope added a prayer for peace in all places:
Let us continue to pray for peace, that wars may cease throughout the world and diplomatic solutions to conflicts may be found. Let us remember all the victims of hostilities, especially the weakest and most defenseless: children, the elderly, and the sick. May the Lord comfort those who suffer and bless the work of those who bring aid and consolation.
