Pirates Stance Emerges On Mariko Amid Talk…

Orlando Pirates are not currently considering a move away for Abdoulaye Mariko, with the club understood to be backing the midfielder to work his way into Abdeslam Ouaddou’s plans despite a slow start to the 2026/27 season.

The 23-year-old Malian joined Pirates in July last year and is now in his second season with the Buccaneers, having seen limited game time during his first campaign.

There had been talk of a possible exit, including the prospect of a loan move, but indications are that such a possibility has been dispelled for now.

The Siya crew understands that Ouaddou remains keen on Mariko and views him as a hard-working midfielder who continues to have a role to play in his plans.

The coach is said to have been impressed by the player’s attitude and work ethic, with the understanding that he will not hesitate to call on Mariko when he feels the time is right.

The situation is particularly interesting given the competition in the Pirates midfield.

In Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Chippa United, Camran Dansin and Thapelo Mokobodi impressed as the two central midfielders, with Ouaddou praising the young pair after the match.

Their performance came with Thalente Mbatha and Sihle Nduli unavailable through injury, while Makhehleni Makhaula, 36, appears to be carefully managed.

That could eventually create opportunities for Mariko as the season progresses. The Malian has yet to establish himself as a regular since arriving at Pirates, but there is no indication that the club has lost faith in him.

Instead, the expectation is that Mariko will continue working and wait for his opportunity. With a long season ahead, the midfielder could yet play his way into a more prominent role under Ouaddou.
