Orlando Pirates have been crowned DStv Diski Challenge champions for the first time after defeating Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 on the final day of the season.
Sundowns once again lined up with the likes of Siyabonga Mabena, Malibongwe Khoza and Thato Sibiya, who have played for the first team while Bennet Mokoena continued to lead the attack.
The Buccaneers, meanwhile, handed a start to Simphiwe Selepe, who has not featured for the first team this season despite playing six matches under Jose Rivieiro last term.
The Soweto giants ended up taking the lead in the 40th minute through Cristian Derbyshire’s well-taken header from a corner.
The lead was doubled on the stroke of halftime when Mpho Padime converted a penalty after Tsiamo Masisi was brought down by Oratile Rantasi.
Pirates were awarded a second penalty in the second period, but Jabulani Mokone was unable to convert, although they had done enough on the defensive end to see out the clash and claim their first-ever Diski Challenge title.
Kaizer Chiefs 11-0 Chippa United
Kaizer Chiefs ended their Diski Challenge campaign in fine style after thrashing Chippa United 8-0 on Saturday morning.
The Amakhosi were eager to bounce back after last week’s loss to Mamelodi Sundowns and they did just that after setting the tone from the onset.
Chiefs raced into a three-goal lead in the first half thanks to an own goal from Ivuwe Mbuyazwe and further goals from Gopolang Taunyana and Naledi Hlongwane.
The Soweto giants blew the Chilli Boys out of the water in the second period as Neo Bohloko and Naledi Hlongwane both netted two goals each while Steven Mendes, Egan Freese, Kabelo Ngkwesa, Kamogelo Malefo and Sibanonga Gumede also got on the score-sheet.
