Pierre Emerick Aubameyang Quits Gabon National Team Following Humiliating Treatment
The legendary striker has shockingly called time on his international career, pointing the finger directly at the national government for disrespecting him after a tough Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
Pierre Emerick Aubameyang has officially decided to quit playing for the Gabon national team. The 37-year-old striker, who stands alone as the all-time leading goalscorer for the Panthers, announced his international retirement following a massive controversy surrounding the 2025 AFCON tournament.
The Breaking Point
The trouble started earlier this year after Gabon was eliminated in the group stage. In response to the poor results, the Gabonese government took extreme measures. They suspended the national team, fired the coaching staff, and specifically banned Aubameyang and veteran defender Bruno Ecuele Manga.
Despite being reinstated later, the new Deportivo La Coruña star revealed that the damage was already done. Speaking about the humiliation he faced, Aubameyang explained that he played through pain for his country, only to be punished:
“They humiliated me and tarnished my image when I had played at AFCON while injured. It was the last straw and I’d rather leave it here.”
Moving Forward In Spain
After an incredible career carrying the hopes of his nation on his back, the legendary forward is now closing that chapter. Aubameyang will now focus all of his remaining footballing energy on helping his newly promoted club, Deportivo, succeed in La Liga.
