Paul Mutsami highlights stark difference between Kenyan and Ugandan rugby

His move back to Kenya has seen him become part of an Oilers side that has shown signs of improvement during the National 7s Circuit after a difficult start at the Prinsloo 7s.

Oilers bounced back to reach the Dala 7s final, where they lost to Kabras RFC, before making the semi-finals at the Kabeberi 7s and finishing fourth at the Driftwood 7s.

Mutsami says the team’s turnaround has been driven by a deliberate review of their performances.

“After the Prinsloo 7s, the coach went back to the drawing board with us. We reviewed what went wrong and what went well, and we have started picking up since then. Now, we are trying to maintain that momentum,” he said.

The centre has quickly settled into life at Menengai Oilers after returning from Uganda, where he had moved in search of a regional challenge.

“Life at Menengai Oilers has been great so far. The team welcomed me very well, so I cannot complain,” he said.

While he has adapted well to his new surroundings, Mutsami admitted that there are still a few differences to get used to.

“The sun is very hot here, unlike Nairobi or Uganda, and I am still adjusting to it. The food is okay, and generally, everything has been great,” he explained.

Mutsami began his career as a back-row forward before transitioning into the backline as a centre during his time at Impala RFC.

He later joined Kenya Harlequin, where he established himself further and served as vice-captain before crossing the border to Uganda.

His performances with Victoria Sharks earned him a return to Kenya, with Oilers head coach Gibson Weru bringing him in as a key addition to strengthen the midfield.

Mutsami also remains part of the Kenya Simbas setup, having made his Test debut against Zambia in October 2023 during the Victoria Cup.

He was also involved in Kenya’s successful Elgon Cup campaign against Uganda.

Despite leaving Victoria Sharks, Mutsami retains fond memories of his time in Uganda and would welcome another opportunity to return.

“Uganda was fun. I made new friends, and some of them were even playing at the Driftwood 7s, so it was a really good experience. If I get another chance, I would definitely go back,” he said.

For now, however, his focus is on helping Oilers maintain their upward trajectory and enjoy a successful season.

“I hope to win more games and make more friends during my time at Menengai Oilers,” Mutsami said.
