Park Police release photos of dirt bikers who fled traffic stop, injuring park officer

The United States Park Police released photos on Saturday in hopes the community recognizes a trio riding dirt bikes that fled a traffic stop and injured a Park police officer in the Rockaways.

The Park Police officer’s all-terrain vehicle overturned when he attempted to pull over the dirt bike riders, who collided with the officer’s ATV near Fort Tilden Chapel inside the national park in Breezy Point around 2:30 p.m. on Sept 2.

“At least one witness reported seeing three individuals riding dirt bikes, at least one of which collided with the officer’s ATV,” a spokesman for the National Park Service said. “The impact caused the ATV to overturn onto the officer.”

The officer was taken to a local hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials.

The trio was last spotted on Nostrand ave. in Brooklyn, USPP said.

Fort Tilden is the site of a former U.S. Army installation that was established as Camp Rockaway Beach shortly after the United States entered World War I in 1917.

The area is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places and forms part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, with a theater and hiking trails featured alongside the fort’s coastal batteries.
