BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham native Chris Richards is representing his country in the World Cup for the first time and his parents, Ken and Carrie, couldn’t be prouder.
Carrie said it was a very emotional moment for them before the U.S. Men’s National Team’s first game against Paraguay.
“I think for both of us, watching the first game, in the national anthem, I just got chills and just poured with tears because of the hard work, the dedication and the people that helped us get here,” Carrie said.
The moment was extra special for the Richards family after an injury forced Chris to be left off of the United States’ roster four years ago.
“When he missed out on the last World Cup, he was devastated. You could just tell that he was going to do everything in his power to make sure this didn’t happen again,” Ken said.
Richards’ parents said their son has faced many doubters throughout his career. Carrie said people questioned whether he was good enough, while Ken said some doubted him because of where he was from.
Through it all, Ken and Carrie say their support for their son has never wavered.
“I think we’re his biggest cheerleaders. I’m his biggest fan,” Carrie said.
As the U.S. Men’s National Team moves forward in the World Cup, Ken has a message for his son.
“I would say I’m proud of you no matter what happens at this point… win or lose, just know that you gave it your all. And if you did then you shouldn’t have any regrets,” Ken said.
Richards was not expected to play Thursday against Turkey because he already has a yellow card in the World Cup. If he receives another yellow card tonight, he would be suspended for the first game of the knockout round next week.
