Pakistani sources say Iran-US ceasefire to be extended

Pakistani security sources have said the ceasefire agreed in mid-June as part of the framework agreement between the United States and Iran is to be extended.

Individuals familiar with the talks told dpa on Wednesday that the extension could last a further 60 or even 90 days. However, they said it has not yet been decided whether this renewed ceasefire will be announced publicly.

Pakistan is acting as a mediator in the conflict.

An agreement between Iran and Oman regarding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is now said to be imminent. Pakistani security sources say this could be reached before Saturday.

A 60-day deadline for negotiations, originally set out in the framework agreement between the US and Iran, expires in mid-August.

The US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28. In mid-April, US President Donald Trump declared a unilateral ceasefire in the conflict.

In mid-June, the US and Iran then agreed, through Pakistani mediation, on a framework agreement that provided for a ceasefire and was intended to pave the way for an end to the war through further negotiations within 60 days.

However, there have been repeated mutual attacks, particularly in the second half of July, and as a result, no in-depth negotiations have taken place.

Most recently, Iran said it held direct negotiations with Oman on how to regulate the passage of ships through the blocked Strait of Hormuz.

Both states had stated that an agreement was close.
