A ferry capsized on Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba on August 11, killing over 90 people in what is reportedly the country’s deadliest transport disaster.
The ferry was travelling from Kariba to a remote rural community when it capsized in strong waves. Police had previously said the vessel was designed to carry 90 passengers, while the government said the number of people and goods on board exceeded its capacity. On 18 August, the government announced the death toll had risen to 94.

The government said 77 people had been rescued and that search and recovery operations were continuing after a cabinet meeting.
According to Reuters, the disaster is reportedly the deadliest transport accident in Zimbabwe’s history, surpassing a 1991 bus crash that killed 89 people.
Lake Kariba, which lies on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, is one of the world’s largest man-made reservoirs.
