Obituary for Penny (Spence) Flake | Bridges

Penny Spence Flake, age 66, of Mebane, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at her home.

She was born in Alamance County on February 4, 1960 to the late Donald Osborne Spence and Edna LaRue Poole Spence.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings Robbie Spence, Carol Solomon and Jean Riley and her son-in-law Richard Gary.  She worked many years as a paralegal.

Penny was outgoing, outspoken, and never afraid to speak her mind. Her honesty and strength were qualities that people admired, and her warm personality could brighten any room. She believed deeply in helping others and giving what she could, whether through kindness, encouragement, or simply being there when someone needed her.

Above all, she was a devoted mother and wife who stood firmly beside her family.  She supported them in every way possible — attending events, offering guidance and cheering them on.  Her love and dedication created a foundation of strength and encouragement that her children will carry with them forever. Throughout her life, she faced many health challenges with courage. Even during difficult times, she continued to show resilience and determination.

She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years Jerry; son Bryan Flake; daughter Jessica Gary; grandchildren Karsyn Gary and Ian Gary and many special nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at a later date.
