The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) is stepping up its technology investments with a plan to develop a 100-megawatt hyperscale data centre campus in Lagos, positioning the facility as a critical piece of infrastructure for Nigeria’s emerging artificial intelligence (AI)-driven digital economy.
The project, known as the KASI Hyperscale Data Centre, is designed to provide the computing power, cloud infrastructure and storage capacity required by businesses, government institutions and technology companies as more economic activity moves online.
Beyond conventional data hosting, KASI is being developed as an AI-ready facility with high-performance GPU computing capabilities, making it possible to train and run AI systems locally.
The investment comes as countries globally race to secure access to computing capacity needed to develop AI applications, with data centres increasingly becoming strategic economic assets rather than simply technology facilities.
For Nigeria, the NSIA investment could help address some of the structural constraints facing the country’s digital economy, including dependence on offshore cloud and data-processing infrastructure, high foreign exchange costs, limited local computing capacity and concerns around data sovereignty.
Upon full development, the KASI campus is expected to have approximately 100MW of combined capacity, putting it among the largest hyperscale and AI-ready data centre developments in Africa.
The facility will provide co-location, cloud computing, storage, virtualisation, AI workload processing, high-performance GPU compute and disaster recovery services to sectors including financial services, telecommunications, healthcare, education and government.

According to NSIA, the investment reflects a broader shift in its infrastructure strategy, with technology increasingly regarded as a cross-cutting driver of productivity, enterprise growth and national competitiveness.
The Authority, under managing director and chief executive officer Aminu Umar-Sadiq, is positioning digital infrastructure alongside traditional infrastructure as an important component of Nigeria’s long-term economic development.
From data storage to AI compute
The strategic importance of KASI extends beyond its capacity to store data.
AI applications require enormous amounts of computing power to train models, process information and deliver services in real time. By developing local GPU infrastructure, NSIA expects Nigerian businesses to gain access to the computing resources required to develop and deploy AI solutions without relying entirely on overseas infrastructure.
For instance, fintech companies could run AI-powered credit scoring and fraud detection systems locally, while healthcare providers could develop diagnostic applications using Nigerian datasets.
Agriculture businesses could deploy AI for precision farming and supply-chain optimisation, while government agencies could use AI-assisted systems for public services and security applications.
This could also create opportunities for Nigerian technology companies to develop AI products around locally available infrastructure, potentially lowering barriers to entry for startups and enterprises.
NSIA said KASI is intended to meet both domestic and international demand, including from global hyperscalers such as Google, Amazon and Meta, as well as Nigerian banks, insurers and technology businesses.
Cutting dependence on offshore infrastructure
One of the major economic arguments behind the project is reducing Nigeria’s reliance on offshore computing and storage.
Financial institutions, government agencies and e-commerce companies increasingly depend on cloud and data-processing services, some of which are hosted outside Nigeria. This creates foreign exchange exposure and can increase the cost of operating digital businesses.
By providing large-scale infrastructure locally, KASI could help retain a greater share of this digital spending within Nigeria while reducing dependence on foreign infrastructure.
The project is therefore being positioned not only as a technology investment but also as an import-substitution and data-sovereignty strategy.
Every dataset processed locally also strengthens Nigeria’s capacity to control, secure and derive economic value from its digital assets.
For NSIA, this is particularly important as sensitive information from financial, healthcare, government and commercial systems becomes increasingly valuable in an AI-driven economy.
Building an investment ecosystem around technology
The KASI project is only one component of NSIA’s broader technology strategy.
The sovereign investment institution is also using its Future Generations Fund (FGF) to gain exposure to venture capital and private equity managers investing in high-growth technology businesses.
Through these investments, NSIA has exposure to sectors including telecommunications infrastructure, broadband connectivity, cloud services, cybersecurity, enterprise technology and digital platforms.
The strategy allows the Authority to participate at different stages of the technology lifecycle—from early-stage innovation and venture capital to growth-stage companies and large-scale digital infrastructure.
NSIA has also established the NSIA Prize for Innovation (NPI) to identify and support Nigerian innovators developing solutions to economic and social challenges.
The programme provides entrepreneurs with capacity building, mentorship, peer learning and ecosystem support, creating a pipeline of technology businesses capable of scaling beyond the early stage.
$50m fund targets innovation
NSIA’s technology strategy also includes international partnerships.
The Authority partnered with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to establish a $50 million Impact Innovation Fund, targeting technology-enabled businesses addressing critical social and economic challenges.
The fund is designed to provide patient capital to businesses that require financing to move through critical stages of growth, while also attracting additional institutional capital into Africa’s technology ecosystem.
Taken together, the initiatives give NSIA exposure to both sides of the digital economy: the infrastructure that powers technology businesses and the companies developing applications and services on top of it.
This could become increasingly important as Nigeria’s young population and expanding digital economy drive demand for cloud services, digital payments, e-commerce, online education, healthcare technology and AI applications.
A race for digital competitiveness
The KASI investment comes at a time when the definition of strategic infrastructure is changing.
Traditional infrastructure such as roads, ports and power remains essential to economic growth, but digital infrastructure is increasingly determining how efficiently businesses operate and how quickly economies can adopt new technologies.
For Nigeria, the challenge is particularly significant because its rapidly expanding digital economy is creating demand for infrastructure that must keep pace with data consumption, cloud adoption and AI deployment.
NSIA’s 100MW KASI ambition therefore represents a bet that computing capacity will become as important to Nigeria’s economic competitiveness as other forms of infrastructure.
If successfully developed, the project could support cloud adoption, attract international technology companies, create high-skilled jobs and reduce dependence on offshore digital infrastructure. It could also strengthen Nigeria’s position in Africa’s emerging AI economy by providing the physical infrastructure needed to train, host and deploy AI systems locally. For NSIA, the objective is ultimately broader than building a data centre.
