NPFL’s new season kicks off amid NFF shake-up

The 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League season began yesterday, with Nigerian football caught between events in the boardroom and expectations on the pitch. Less than 24 hours before kick-off, NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the Executive Committee resigned following sustained criticism over the performances of Nigeria’s national teams. The Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ failure to reach the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup were among the setbacks that increased pressure on the federation’s leadership.

The changes spread to the domestic leagues. NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye, along with the leadership of the Nigeria National League, Nigeria Women Football League and Nationwide League One, was directed to hand over administrative responsibilities as the country’s football authorities moved into an interim arrangement.

The timing was dramatic: only days earlier, the league had announced a three-year, $7.5 million title sponsorship agreement with Euromatch, worth $2.5 million per season, with 60 per cent of the revenue expected to go to the clubs, particularly for players’ wages and welfare. The league enters the season with one of its strongest commercial positions in years, but with uncertainty over the administration that negotiated it.

Changing administrators does not automatically change the structures already in place for fixtures, registration, officiating and match operations, and Matchday One is going ahead as planned. The immediate challenge is continuity: the NPFL cannot afford uncertainty over refereeing, discipline, broadcast arrangements, sponsorship obligations, club payments or fixture administration, particularly if the interim arrangement runs long. The Euromatch deal’s success will be judged by implementation rather than its unveiling. Former Sports Minister Sunday Dare had described the sponsorship as evidence of the benefits of treating sport as a business, while Elegbeleye said the emphasis should be on making the players the main attraction. That objective should survive a change of administrators; the bigger test is whether the league’s operations depend on institutions rather than individuals.

The new season began yesterday when Shooting Stars Sports Club welcomed newly promoted Inter Lagos to the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, ahead of nine fixtures on Sunday.

Defending champions Rangers International host Katsina United in Enugu, with the Flying Antelopes eager to test the champions early. Rangers, despite a goalless draw at home to Kun Khalifat last season, still went on to win the title under Fidelis Ilechukwu. Rivers United host Plateau United in one of the weekend’s most attractive fixtures, with the Port Harcourt side, who finished second last season, still among the leading contenders, though Plateau United are experienced enough to make the trip difficult. Nine-time champions Enyimba travel to Niger Tornadoes in Minna, needing a strong response after a disappointing campaign, while the hosts will recognise the value of beating one of the country’s biggest clubs on opening day.

Matchday One also offers an early test for the promoted sides. Barau FC host Nasarawa United, Kun Khalifat travel to Abia Warriors in an Oriental derby, and Ranchers Bees are away to Ikorodu City, with the step up from the second tier likely to prove unforgiving.

Bendel Insurance host Warri Wolves in a fixture with regional bragging rights at stake. Kano Pillars travel to Kwara United, and Doma United host Sporting Lagos, who return to the top flight facing an early away test.

The NFF upheaval means administrative questions will not disappear now that the league has started. There will be scrutiny of the interim leadership, the future of the NPFL’s management structure, and whether existing commercial and operational agreements are maintained. Yet there is also opportunity: the NPFL has secured a major title sponsorship after more than a decade without one, the 2026/27 champions are expected to receive a record N1 billion prize, and matches will stream free on YouTube. Whoever administers the competition from here must ensure the leadership changes do not undermine those gains. Its 20 clubs have a season to play, and Matchday One is under way.
