The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has officially released its calendar of activities for the 2026/2027 football season, confirming that the new campaign will commence between August 28 and 30, 2026.
The comprehensive schedule outlines key pre-season activities, registration deadlines, transfer windows, domestic cup fixtures and the proposed conclusion of the league season on May 30, 2027.
League organisers said the calendar is aimed at ensuring proper planning, improved organisation and a seamless football season while giving clubs sufficient time to meet licensing and operational requirements.
The schedule also reflects the NPFL’s commitment to maintaining a stable football calendar that aligns with continental and international competitions.
Pre-season preparations begin
According to the calendar, preparations for the new campaign will begin in June with a series of administrative and compliance exercises involving all participating clubs.
These activities include club licensing, verification of financial obligations, inspection of stadiums and facilities, and compliance assessments covering infrastructure, administration and safety standards.
As part of the licensing process, clubs are expected to settle outstanding salaries owed to players, coaches and other football personnel before receiving approval to participate in the new season.
The inspections will also assess the readiness of match venues to ensure they meet the standards required for top-flight football.
League officials believe these measures will improve professionalism and reduce disputes relating to unpaid wages and inadequate facilities during the season.
AGM and Super 4 tournament
Before the commencement of league matches, the NPFL will organise its Annual General Meeting (AGM), where club representatives and league stakeholders are expected to review the previous season and deliberate on plans for the new campaign.
The AGM will also provide an opportunity to discuss proposed amendments to league regulations and operational guidelines.
Following the meeting, the official fixtures for the 2026/2027 season will be drawn to determine the opening matches and the schedule for all 38 rounds of league action.
As part of the traditional pre-season activities, the NPFL will stage the Super 4/6 tournament in Lagos.
The competition is expected to feature top-performing clubs from the previous campaign and serve as a platform for teams to fine-tune their preparations before the league begins.
Player registration and transfer windows
The league has allocated July and August for player registration and licensing.
Clubs are required to complete the registration of all eligible players by August 22 to ensure they are available for selection during the opening weekend.
The first transfer window will officially open on July 15 and remain active until September 14, allowing clubs to recruit new players and strengthen their squads during the early stages of the season.
A second transfer window will open throughout January 2027, providing another opportunity for clubs to reinforce their teams for the second half of the campaign.
The transfer periods are expected to play a crucial role in squad development as clubs seek to improve performances and compete for honours.
League season and Federation Cup schedule
The 2026/2027 NPFL season will consist of 38 matchdays and run from late August until May 30, 2027.
The first half of the campaign will conclude after Matchday 19 in December before clubs proceed on a mid-season break from December 23 to January 6.
League action will resume in January following the festive holidays.
The calendar also accommodates the President Federation Cup, ensuring domestic cup fixtures are played alongside league matches without significant scheduling conflicts.
State qualifying playoffs for the competition are scheduled to begin in early February 2027 before progressing through the Round of 64, Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals.
The final is expected to be played towards the end of the football season.
Long-term planning for Nigerian football
Beyond the forthcoming campaign, the NPFL also outlined its long-term scheduling strategy aimed at ensuring consistency in the organisation of domestic football competitions.
According to the league, the current 2025/2026 season will conclude on May 24, 2026, while the 2026/2027 season is expected to end on May 30, 2027.
The league further disclosed that the 2027/2028 campaign is tentatively scheduled to commence between August 27 and 29, 2027.
The calendar also includes orientation programmes for newly promoted clubs to familiarise them with the league’s operational guidelines, licensing requirements and competition regulations.
League organisers expressed confidence that the early release of the calendar would allow clubs, players, match officials and other stakeholders to prepare adequately for another successful NPFL season while promoting greater professionalism, stability and competitiveness across Nigeria’s top-flight football league.
