In a bid to ensure a heavy presence on social media, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), has concluded plans to set up a social media department.
Chairman of the NPFL Board, Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye, disclosed this during an interview at the Maldron Hotel, Glasgow, Scotland.
The move, according to the astute football administrator, is part of efforts by the NPFL leadership to reposition the league.
The former deputy chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Sports, revealed that discussions had been held with leading Nigerian entertainers, who have agreed in principle to support the NPFL’s fan engagement campaign.
The former director general of the National Sports Commission (NSC), who announced the planned establishment of the social media department, said it will be made up of experienced sports journalists, digital creators and young media professionals to drive content creation and expand the league’s online audience.
“We are setting up a social media department that will bring together journalists who have remained committed to the league and young, creative media professionals. Our mission is to consistently tell the NPFL story and connect with fans across digital platforms.

“Our goal is to consistently tell the NPFL story and connect with fans across digital platforms,” he said.
The Ikare Akoko-born sports administrator stated that the Nigerian top-flight would continue to adhere to the August-to-May football calendar, describing it as a reflection of the NPFL’s growing professionalism.
Meanwhile, the NPFL Board is set to name a title sponsor for the league.
According to information, the new NPFL title sponsorship agreement is valued at more than $7.5 million over a three-year period, making it one of the most significant commercial partnerships in the league’s history.
Elegbeleye said negotiations with the prospective sponsor for the sponsorship of the Nigerian top flight had reached an advanced stage, with the official unveiling expected before the league’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled to take place today in Ibadan, Oyo State.
“We are finalising the details. I have travelled abroad to conclude discussions and ensure everything is properly put in place.
“Beyond becoming our title sponsor, this partnership will also strengthen our digital presence as we work to grow the league’s social media platforms through influencers and strategic content creation,” Elegbeleye said.
