27th May 2026 – Capitol Hill, Liberia: Amid widespread rumors of an Ebola epidemic entering Liberia following the return of health workers from Uganda, Health Minister Dr. Louise M. Kpoto has assured the public that there is no Ebola in Liberia, despite the panic and spread of misinformation.

Addressing the House of Representatives (HOR) on the country’s surveillance and preparedness to combat the deadly virus, Dr. Kpoto reassured lawmakers that health authorities remain vigilant and have implemented robust measures to quickly identify and respond to any potential threats.

She stated that the country has not recorded any Ebola cases, despite growing fears over the recent outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

According to the Minister, the outbreak in Congo was officially declared on May 15, while Uganda also reported cases on the same day. She revealed that as of May 25, there were 996 suspected cases under investigation, 240 suspected deaths, and 106 laboratory-confirmed Ebola cases in the affected countries.

The Minister noted that the World Health Organization has classified the outbreak as a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern,” while the Africa CDC has categorized it as a Grade 3 high-risk outbreak due to confirmed human transmission and increased regional movement.

She emphasized that Liberia is currently not responding to an emergency situation but is instead focusing on preventive interventions to stop the virus from entering the country.

“To answer the concerns raised by lawmakers and the public, there is no Ebola in Liberia,” the Minister declared before the plenary.

Dr. Kpoto outlined a series of measures already instituted by the Government of Liberia, including the establishment of a National Ebola Preparedness Team to coordinate readiness efforts. She further disclosed that Liberia’s Public Health Emergency Operations Center has been placed on alert for real-time monitoring and coordination.

The Health Minister said surveillance for viral hemorrhagic fevers has intensified nationwide, while screening at airports, border crossings, and other entry points has also been strengthened.
She added that the government has enhanced laboratory preparedness and diagnostic capacity, while healthcare workers across the country continue to undergo training and sensitization on Ebola response protocols.

Despite these ongoing preparations, Minister Kpoto acknowledged several challenges confronting Liberia’s health sector. She highlighted limited emergency preparedness funding, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and insufficient isolation facilities and medical equipment as major concerns in the event of an outbreak.

She also noted that procurement procedures under the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC) remain a challenge in quickly securing critical medical supplies and personal protective equipment.

The Minister called on lawmakers to support efforts aimed at improving border control coordination, expanding healthcare infrastructure, and strengthening inter-agency collaboration to ensure Liberia remains prepared against any potential Ebola threat.

She warned that although Liberia currently has no confirmed Ebola cases, the evolving situation in neighboring African countries requires continued vigilance and preparedness to avoid another national health crisis similar to the devastating 2014 outbreak that killed thousands of Liberians.
