Nimba Women’s Savings Group Marks Flag Day in Ganta

GANTA, Nimba County, August 27, 2026 — The Nimba Women Empowerment Village Savings and Loans Initiative held a Flag Day program in Ganta on August 24, bringing together more than 2,000 women from the county’s nine electoral districts, organizers said.

The event was organized to commemorate Liberia’s 179th Flag Day and highlight women’s participation in community development and local savings programs.

Participants paraded through parts of Ganta wearing Liberia’s national colors before gathering for the program.

Organizers said the celebration also provided an opportunity for members of the initiative to discuss how village savings and loans are being used to support women’s economic activities across Nimba County.

Lead organizer Vickey Cooper told reporters the initiative supports women’s groups through village savings and loans intended to help members improve their livelihoods.

Cooper said participating groups can access loans of up to LD$75,000 at relatively low interest rates for income-generating activities and household needs.

She said the program is intended to give women greater access to financial resources, particularly those with limited options for financing small businesses.

According to Cooper, some beneficiaries have used the loans to support their families, pay school fees and expand small businesses.

Cooper said the current loan amount is not enough to meet the demand and that she plans to lobby stakeholders and development partners for additional support.

Cooper also called for greater investment in women’s empowerment programs, stressing that providing women with access to affordable financial resources can contribute significantly to economic growth, household stability, and community development.

Women representatives from Electoral Districts 3 and 4 said the initiative has helped members operate small businesses, educate their children, and support their families.

Charlotte Mianzo, a representative from Electoral District 3, said her 42-member group received a LD$75,000 loan through the initiative.

Mianzo said the group used the loan to strengthen its savings activities and invest in small businesses.

She encouraged other women to join village savings groups, saying they can help promote financial independence and community development.

The program ended with calls for stronger support for women-led economic initiatives in Nimba County.
