Nigeria’s YellowGreens defeat Uganda in U19 female cricket qualifier

Nigeria’s junior female YellowGreens have defeated Uganda U19 Women by four wickets in their opening match of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa qualifier division 1, in Tanzania.

The victory gives Nigeria a positive start to its campaign in the Africa qualifier.

Zeal Ibe, media manager for the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), announced the victory on Sunday in Lagos.

According to Mr Ibe, Uganda won the toss and elected to bat, but Nigeria’s disciplined bowling restricted the Ugandan side to 59 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs.

He said Shadiah Gilingish Nabulime was Uganda’s top scorer with 22 runs from 34 balls, while Jimia Abdallah Mohamed added 13 runs from 25 deliveries.

According to him, Nigeria’s bowling attack delivered a strong collective performance, led by Chisom Okpe, who took two wickets for four runs in four overs.

He noted that Peace Usen also claimed two wickets for 12 runs.

The federation media manager said that, needing 60 runs for victory, Nigeria’s chase initially appeared under control.

“However, Uganda’s Tino Sarah produced an impressive bowling spell that brought the match back to life.

“Sarah claimed five wickets for 13 runs in four overs, including two maiden overs, as Nigeria lost wickets at regular intervals.

“In spite of the pressure, the Junior Female YellowGreens remained composed and determined to complete the chase.

“Omosigho Eguakun laid the foundation for Nigeria’s innings with a patient 24 runs from 29 balls.

“Christabel Chukwuonye also made an important attacking contribution, scoring 13 runs from 10 deliveries, including three boundaries,” he stated.

Mr Ibe said the junior female YellowGreens would now look to build on the result and push for a place in the next stage of the global qualification pathway.
