Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has appealed to Afrobeats superstars Burna Boy, Davido and Asake to establish a joint charitable foundation to support vulnerable Nigerians, saying their financial success could help reduce the burden on government.
Speaking while inspecting the National Community Food Bank Project for North Central Nigeria, Mrs Tinubu urged the musicians and other successful young Nigerians to dedicate part of their wealth to helping people in need.
She said while there is nothing wrong with enjoying the rewards of success, philanthropy should remain a priority.
“I think it’s high time we started helping those who need help in the country. I want to appeal to our young ones in the entertainment industry,” she said.
Addressing the three artistes directly, she added: “Burna Boy, Asake and Davido, we want to see you come together under one foundation to help the poor with your money.”
Mrs Tinubu acknowledged that luxury lifestyles are part of success but said they should not come at the expense of giving back to society.
“Good cars are good, a Maybach is good, and Rolls-Royce is good, but you can still help. The burden on the government is huge, you can still help,” she said.
Her remarks came during an inspection of the National Community Food Bank Project, one of the Federal Government’s initiatives aimed at strengthening food security and providing support to vulnerable households across Nigeria.
The First Lady’s comments add to growing calls for high-profile entertainers and business leaders to play a greater role in addressing poverty and supporting social welfare initiatives through philanthropy.
Neither Burna Boy, Davido nor Asake had publicly responded to the appeal at the time of publication.
