Nigeria U-20 coach Aduku promises improvement after Spain loss

In Nigeria, the country’s women’s youth national team lost 0-2 to Spain in the opening match of Group F at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Nigeria head coach Moses Aduku acknowledged that his players did not deliver the required performance but expressed confidence in reaching the playoffs.

According to Premium Times Nigeria, Spain opened the scoring through a goal by Marisa Garcia following an action by Noe Bejarano. In the second half, substitute Alba Serrato scored with her left foot seven minutes after coming on to double her team’s lead.

Nigeria did not take its chance

The Nigerian team did not create enough scoring opportunities throughout the match. Its best chance came seven minutes before the final whistle, when Precious Oscar shot from about 10 yards, but the ball went wide of the goal.

Spain head coach David Aznar said his team expected a difficult match against physically strong Nigeria. According to him, victory in the first game of the tournament leaves the Spanish side able to determine its own fate in the following matches.

Upcoming group matches

Aduku told FIFA media that his team did not play at its level, but still has two group matches left and is capable of correcting the situation. He added that the players tried to do everything possible and that the team will improve its performance in the next match.

In the final two group-stage matches, Nigeria will play against China and New Caledonia. The coach believes the team can recover from the defeat to Spain and reach the playoff stage.
