Nigeria Target 11th Wafcon Title in Morocco

According to BBC News, Nigeria have arrived in Morocco seeking an 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title after winning a record-extending 10th crown last July. The Super Falcons begin their 2026 Wafcon campaign against debutants Malawi on Tuesday, before Group C matches against Zambia and Egypt.

Nigeria have won 10 of the 13 editions since the tournament began in 1998. Head coach Justin Madugu, who led last year’s title-winning campaign, said the holders know other sides will be determined to beat them. “It’s not going to be easy,” he said, while assistant coach Ann Chiejine said Nigeria must train harder.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, last year’s best player, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and six-time African player of the year Asisat Oshoala bring experience to the squad. Madugu has also included younger players, including Sweden-based striker Joy Omewa and 21-year-old goalkeeper Comfort Erhabor, who made her debut against Cameroon.

The expanded 16-team tournament also serves as a qualifier for next year’s Fifa Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with the four semi-finalists guaranteed places. Winger Francisca Ordega said qualifying for the World Cup is Nigeria’s first target before thoughts turn to defending the continental title.

Nigeria face increasing competition, including Malawi’s Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa, and Zambia’s Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji. Centre-back Ashleigh Plumptre is unavailable because of a foot injury, while the tournament winners will receive $2m (£1.5m) after the prize pot was doubled.
