Nigeria NPFL 2025/26 – Results, Table & Standings Recap
Rangers International went into matchday 38 knowing only victory would guarantee the title. They travelled to Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, while Rivers United hosted Katsina United in Port Harcourt.
Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo scored twice for Rangers International, in the 30th and 58th minutes, before Moses Ali pulled one back for Ikorodu City.
Rangers International held on to win 2-1 and finish top with 68 points. Rivers United won 3-0 at home to Katsina United but finished on 67 points, one short. Both clubs qualified for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League.
Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, who also won the title with Rangers International in 2023/24, sprinted onto the pitch at full-time. President Bola Tinubu issued a statement congratulating the club on a record ninth championship.
Third place went to Shooting Stars, who finished on 60 points and claimed a CAF Confederation Cup spot under then-coach Nurudeen Aweroro, the club’s first continental qualification in 27 years.
Four clubs went down: Wikki Tourists, Bayelsa United, El-Kanemi Warriors and Remo Stars. Remo Stars, the 2024/25 champions, survived on goal difference for most of the run-in before going down on the final day. They were only the third reigning champion relegated the following season, after Shooting Stars in 1999 and Bayelsa United in 2010. Kwara United stayed up by finishing above them.
Two clubs deserve attention for how close they came. Enyimba finished 11th with 49 points, enduring one of their most difficult and inconsistent campaigns in recent history. El-Kanemi Warriors went down after a 0-3 defeat at Enyimba on the final day, finishing 18th with 47 points and a goal difference of -16, matching the point tally of safety but falling short on goal difference.
Ikorodu City finished fourth on 58 points. Joseph Arumala’s form pushed the club into the scoring charts all season. They finished with a tally of 43 goals, the fourth best behind Rangers International (47), Rivers United (44), and Bendel Insurance (44). Their fourth-place finish reflected a campaign that kept them in continental contention into the closing weeks. They even lost out on the final berth to relegated El-Kanemi Warriors, who won the 2026 President Federation Cup.

NPFL Top Scorers, Players and Season Stats 2025/26
Three players tied on 14 goals: Godwin Obaje (Rangers International), Victor Mbaoma (Remo Stars), and Jonathan Mairiga (Wikki Tourists). The NPFL’s tiebreaker for goals scored from open play awarded the Golden Boot to Mairiga, whose 14 goals included no penalties. Mbaoma and Obaje each scored one penalty.
Mairiga operated as a midfielder rather than a recognised striker, and scored six goals in Wikki’s final six matches as the Bauchi club fell towards relegation regardless. Obaje had also won the Golden Boot in 2016 with 18 goals. Joseph Arumala of Ikorodu City finished one goal back, on 13, in his debut NPFL campaign.
For context on the previous season: Anas Yusuf of Nasarawa United, who won the 2024/25 Golden Boot with 18 goals, left the NPFL midway through the 2025/26 season to join Algerian club JS Saoura on 31 January 2026. Furthermore, in 2023/24, Chijioke Mbaoma secured the top scorer accolade by scoring 17 goals for Enyimba.
Current Rangers International forward Godwin Obaje is a rare two-era contender, having previously won the Golden Boot a decade ago with 18 goals in 2016.

NPFL News – What’s New in 2026/27
Sporting Lagos won the 2026 NNL Super Four in Ikenne, finishing above Inter Lagos on goal difference despite losing the final-day derby to them. Ranchers Bees and Doma United finished third and fourth to complete the four promoted teams. All four attended an NPFL orientation workshop on 26 June 2026.
Sporting Lagos returns to the top flight following their 2023/24 relegation, where they finished 17th with 46 points. Their promotion means three Lagos clubs (Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, and Ikorodu City) will share the top flight simultaneously for the first time in Nigerian football history.
National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko confirmed a ₦1 billion (~$730,000 USD) prize for the 2026/27 champions, representing the largest payout in Nigerian club football history.
Rangers International and Rivers United both kept their managers. Fidelis Ilechukwu and Finidi George are both are preparing their squads for concurrent domestic and CAF Champions League commitments. Conversely, Shooting Stars parted with Nurudeen Aweroro after his third-place finish and appointed veteran coach Salisu Yusuf, who previously managed Kano Pillars, Rangers International, and Enyimba.
Enyimba’s off-season follows a 2025/26 campaign without a title challenge. The club worked through four setups during the year:
- Stanley Eguma was suspended in November after four defeats in six matches.
- Deji Ayeni‘s January appointment was disrupted by a boardroom dispute.
- Cameroonian Emmanuel Deutsch Detchoua Gustave was appointed Technical Adviser in February.
- Uche Okechukwu returned as vice-chairman under chairman Nwankwo Kanu to rebuild the club following an 11th-place finish.
Remo Stars enter a transitional phase. The 2024/25 champions stayed in a relegation fight until the final day before goal difference confirmed their drop to the NNL. To manage their immediate promotion campaign, the club promoted former academy head coach Olumide Ajibolade to head coach.
NPFL Key Transfers 2026/27
Jonathan Mairiga’s Golden Boot form attracted competitive contract offers from Rivers United, Shooting Stars, and Barau FC.
Rivers United offered a ₦1.5 million (~$1,100 USD) monthly salary and a ₦4 million (~$2,900 USD) signing-on fee. Despite interest from these clubs, Mairiga signed a two-year contract with Bendel Insurance on 29 July 2026. The club reinforced their squad for the CAF Champions League by signing three players from Kun Khalifat: midfielders Chikamso Amaefula and Blessed Iyamu, and striker James Ekebuike.
Barau FC, who finished eighth in their debut NPFL season with 52 points, made 14 new signings. These additions include El-Kanemi Warriors forward Daddy Abdulrahman and former Wikki Tourists midfielder Nasiru Jubrin, as the club targets depth using personnel from the relegated sides.

Both Nigerian clubs confirmed their opponents during the CAF Champions League draw in Cairo. Champions Rangers International face Benin Republic side AS Sobemap in the first preliminary round, while Rivers United open against Ivorian club FC San Pedro. No Nigerian club has won the competition since Enyimba’s consecutive titles concluded in 2004.
Nigeria NPFL Trophy Race 2026/27 – Who Will Win?
The race for the historic ₦1 billion champion’s prize features three primary contenders, Rangers International, Rivers United, and Enyimba, alongside a highly volatile dark horse in Shooting Stars. A detailed tactical breakdown of each side’s structural advantages and multi-front challenges reveals Rivers United as our pick to emerge champions.
Rangers International
The 2025/26 champions are level with Enyimba on nine league titles. Head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu has secured two championships in the last three seasons, and Golden Boot winner Godwin Obaje will be an option in attack for the manager.
Rangers International face an immediate logistical and scheduling test following their CAF Champions League first preliminary round draw against Benin Republic side AS Sobemap. Because their own stadium lacks required licensing, they must play their designated continental “home” fixture at an alternative approved venue outside Enugu.
This scheduling conflict directly disrupts their domestic title defence during the opening weeks of the season. The first preliminary leg (4-6 September 2026) and the return leg (11-13 September 2026) fall in the same September window as the league’s opening matchdays, which points to early postponements or fixture congestion. Rangers International will play CAF home matches at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, and not their home stadium.
Rivers United
Rivers United launches its campaign under Finidi George on Sunday, 30 August 2026, hosting Plateau United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium. After finishing as runners-up by a single point, George added squad depth. Kun Khalifat is to manage the physical demands of balancing the NPFL, the CAF Champions League, and the President Federation Cup.
Enyimba
The appointment of Emmanuel Deutsch Detchoua Gustave and the reinstatement of vice-chairman Uche Okechukwu aim to stabilise the club after technical and boardroom transitions. The nine-time domestic champions finished 11th last season, missing out on continental qualification slots. Enyimba’s 49 points were 19 behind Rangers International and 11 short of the third-placed continental berth.
Dark Horse: Shooting Stars
Finishing third ended a 27-year continental absence. They enter the CAF Confederation Cup under the guidance of Salisu Yusuf, where African travel will test a thin squad. The workload on the team increased because CAF disqualified the home grounds of all four of Nigeria’s continental entrants, meaning they must relocate when playing CAF matches, adding to the logistical and travel challenges. Shooting Stars must also play their continental home fixtures at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State, losing true home-ground advantage.
Our Pick
Rivers United is our selection to win the 2026/27 title. While Rangers International face severe squad strain from intensive CAF Champions League travel, Finidi George has explicitly built tactical depth by securing top talent from Kun Khalifat to survive multi-front fixture congestion.
For the drop, Kwara United is our selection for relegation. After narrowly escaping last season on a single-goal margin, their lack of summer squad upgrades exposes them to the immediate tactical superiority of the four ambitious, newly promoted NNL sides. Live title race markets and outright selections are hosted across the 22Bet NPFL sportsbook platforms.
NPFL Relegation Battle – Who Goes Down?
The four promoted clubs face an immediate survival battle due to the physical and tactical transition from NNL football. While Sporting Lagos brings recent top-flight experience, Ranchers Bees are relying on a heavily restructured infrastructure to bridge the gap.
Backed by new investment under Sadiq Umar’s ownership group, the Kaduna-based club has completely overhauled its sporting setup and funded a major facility upgrade in Minna to secure an alternative home ground that meets strict NPFL licensing criteria. These administrative upgrades aim to offset their lack of modern top-flight continuity, having last competed in the premier division during 2009/10.
Following their relegation at the end of the 2023/24 season, Doma United has completed a rapid descent and subsequent return to the top flight after securing promotion from the NNL. The Gombe-based club originally debuted in the NPFL during the 2022/23 season and maintained its status for two terms before dropping down. Their journey back to the premier division underscores the extreme volatility faced by clubs operating outside the traditional elite.
Inter Lagos enters the top tier for the first time in club history. Founded in 2023, the team secured promotion from the NNL in April 2026. They enter the top tier after narrowly missing out on the NNL silverware, finishing as runners-up to Sporting Lagos on goal difference in the Super Four tournament in Ikenne. They face the most demanding debut possible in top-flight football. They open their campaign on Friday, 28 August 2026, with a high-pressure away match against traditional heavyweights Shooting Stars at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.
A single-goal margin on the final day of last season is the only reason Kwara United remains a top-flight club today. They preserved their status solely on a minor goal difference advantage of -4, finishing just ahead of the relegated Remo Stars who sat on -5. Without significant summer squad upgrades, they enter the 2026/27 cycle highly exposed to the bottom four relegation positions.
Katsina United completes the relegation shortlist following a fragile defensive collapse on the final day, where they conceded three goals to Rivers United. While striker Uche Collins remains their most lethal asset after registering 12 goals last term, the squad lacks defensive reinforcement to support his output, exposing them to danger.
