Police in Nigeria’s Rivers State have detained a police officer and members of his team after an alleged shooting that killed driver Anthony Obodo. The incident occurred on Thursday during a confrontation, and two bystanders were also injured.
This was reported by Premium Times Nigeria, citing a statement by state police spokesperson Blessing Agabe, published on Facebook on Friday.
Police version
According to preliminary police information, an argument broke out between Obodo and one of the law enforcement officers and escalated into a confrontation. A gunshot was heard during it. Police identified one of the officers as Corporal Alfred Louis.
The department said that after the incident, a crowd attacked Louis and beat him, leaving him with multiple injuries. The police officers involved in the incident were taken into custody at the state Criminal Investigation Department. Further disciplinary measures will depend on the results of the investigation.

Family statements
In a video circulating on Facebook and cited by police, two law enforcement officers speak with the deceased man’s relatives near what is believed to be the family home. One of them reportedly confirmed that the police officer pursued Obodo on foot, then loaded his weapon and fired.
A relative of the deceased questioned this version and said that the law enforcement officers had consumed alcohol before pursuing Obodo. The family also expressed concern that the shooting could later be described as an accidental discharge. The police officer speaking with the relatives assured them that there must be justice in the case.
Rivers State Police called the alleged shooting unacceptable and said it would not protect officers who act unethically or bring disrepute to the Nigeria Police Force.
