Nigeria Dazzles at Benin’s 66th Independence Anniversary

Nigeria joined the Republic of Benin in commemorating its 66th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming the longstanding ties between the two neighbouring countries through a military and cultural display in Cotonou.

The celebration, held at the iconic Amazone in Cotonou, featured military parades and cultural performances, with the Nigerian contingent participating at the invitation of the Beninese government.

The contingent, led by the Commander of the 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Ayokunle Olufemi Owolabi, performed a march past in both slow and quick time before dignitaries attending the event.

According to a Monday statement by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 9 Brigade, Maj. Akinola Ajibola, the contingent’s display earned applause from Benin’s President, Romuald Wadagni, and other guests.

“The Nigerian contingent, led by the Commander 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ayokunle Olufemi Owolabi, thrilled dignitaries and spectators with a flawless march past executed in both slow and quick time.

“Displaying exceptional discipline, impeccable coordinations, and military precision, the contingent earned loud applause from His Excellency, the President of Benin, Mr Romuald Wadagni and the audience,” the statement read.

The statement added that the Nigerian Army’s silent drill performance was one of the highlights of the celebration.

“The highlight of Nigeria’s participation was the breathtaking silent drill display by the Nigerian Army.

“The spectacular performance showcased extraordinary dexterity, synchronization and mastery of arms handling, leaving the audience visibly mesmerised and drawing sustained ovation from distinguished guests and thousands of spectators gathered for the national celebration,” it further read.

Among those who attended the event were Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim; the Nigerian Defence Attaché to the Republic of Benin, Col. S.A. Yahaya; senior military officers; government officials; members of the diplomatic corps; and representatives of other friendly nations.

The Army said Nigeria’s participation reflected the enduring cordial relationship between both countries and demonstrated its commitment to strengthening military diplomacy, regional partnerships, and peace in West Africa.

It added that the contingent’s performance projected the professionalism of the Nigerian Army while reinforcing the historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.
