Nienaber’s new boss named

Jacques Nienaber has clarity on his reporting line at Leinster after the club confirmed the appointment of a successor to outgoing head coach Leo Cullen.

Noel McNamara will take charge of the Irish province from 1 July 2027, bringing an end to Cullen’s 11-year tenure at the conclusion of the 2026-27 season.

The appointment means Nienaber, who joined Leinster as senior coach in 2023 after leaving the Springboks following their second successive World Cup triumph, would work under McNamara when the coaching transition takes place.

Nienaber’s current Leinster contract expires at the end of the current season, and he has a six-month break clause that could allow him to leave earlier.

The former Bok coach has been linked with a return to South Africa and a reunion with Rassie Erasmus ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

The 53-year-old has helped Leinster win back-to-back URC titles and reach two Investec Champions Cup finals.

McNamara is currently attack coach at French club Bordeaux Bègles, having helped them secure consecutive European cup titles. He previously spent five years at Leinster, working as academy manager and Leinster A coach between 2016 and 2021.
