MTN South Sudan broadband coverage reaches 85%
MTN South Sudan has increased its population broadband coverage from 76.6% to 85% over the past two years after modernizing more than 500 network sites across the country.
The telecommunications operator said network availability has also improved from 97% to 99% following infrastructure upgrades carried out in partnership with Communication & Renewable Energy Infrastructure (CREI), with support from development finance partners including Finnfund.
The upgrades are part of efforts to expand connectivity in South Sudan, where limited infrastructure and long distances between communities continue to challenge network expansion.
Furthermore, MTN South Sudan has deployed hybrid solar and battery systems at network sites through an Energy Service Company (ESCO) model with CREI. The systems are designed to reduce dependence on diesel generators while improving network infrastructure resilience.
According to the company, diesel consumption at supported sites has fallen by more than 50% following the introduction of the hybrid energy systems, while the contribution of renewable energy to the infrastructure has increased.
Mapula Bodibe, Chief Executive Officer of MTN South Sudan, said the financing and infrastructure partnership has enabled the operator to accelerate its network expansion, particularly in underserved areas.
“The support from Finnfund and CREI has allowed us to fast-track connectivity and reach more of the country, especially the remote areas where the need is greatest. We can now set truly ambitious goals, like reaching 100% population coverage.”
MTN South Sudan said the infrastructure programme has also created more than 100 direct jobs through CREI’s operations in the country, in addition to indirect employment.
The company is targeting further network expansion as it works towards increasing access to mobile connectivity in remote and underserved communities.
Bodibe said improved connectivity could help communities access digital and financial services, communicate, support businesses and participate more fully in the digital economy.
