MSF: Ebola outbreak in Uganda declared officially over by WHO

27 August 2026: August the 27th marks the official end of the Ebola outbreak in Uganda according to the World Health Organisation, with 42 days without a new person confirmed infected by the Bundibugyo virus. This outbreak involved 20 infected people, 18 of whom recovered, while two, unfortunately, died.

Over the last three months, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been working in good and close collaboration with the Ministry of Health to support where it was required and stand ready to increase its response in case of need.

Our team rehabilitated a 32-bed Ebola Treatment Unit in Mulago, Kampala, immediately after the outbreak was declared, and a 19-beds isolation centre in the city of Bwera, located in south-western Uganda and bordering DRC. We are pleased to have had the opportunity to train several Emergency Medical Teams of the Ministry of Health and to support health professionals in terms of infection prevention and control, isolation, and case management in 8 health centres.

MSF has been present in Uganda since 1980 and remains present in Kasese district where our teams run a clinic tailored to the needs of adolescents, delivering a broad range of medical services, with a focus on sexual and reproductive healthcare and management of chronic conditions – such as sickle cell disease, for people between 9 months and 19 years, and also social and mental health support for victims and survivors of sexual violence of all ages.
