Mountakhab 2026: Marwane Saadane, a World Cup dream fulfilled at 34

Saadane, who was born in Mohammedia on January 17, 1992, received a late call-up roughly 48 hours before Morocco’s highly anticipated World Cup opener against Brazil in Group C, after medical assessments confirmed that Nayef Aguerd would be unable to participate in the tournament.

Marwane Saadane began his professional career with Chabab Mohammedia during the 2010-11 season before joining FUS Rabat in 2011, where he established himself as one of the Moroccan league’s standout defenders.

During his five-year spell in the capital, he helped FUS Rabat win the Throne Cup in 2013-14 and played a key role in securing the club’s first-ever Moroccan league title in the 2015-16 season.

In 2016, Saadane moved to Turkey to join Çaykur Rizespor, where he spent three seasons and contributed to the club’s Turkish First League title-winning campaign in 2017-18. He then signed for Saudi side Al Fateh in 2019, where he has remained ever since.

Over the years, Saadane has become one of the Saudi Pro League’s most consistent defenders. Equally comfortable at centre-back and in defensive midfield, his versatility has made him a valuable asset for every coach he has worked under.

His contribution at Al Fateh extends beyond defensive duties. Known for his composure in possession and ability to build attacks from the back, he recently became one of the club’s most-capped players, surpassing 200 appearances in all competitions.

While primarily a defender, Saadane has also chipped in with important goals throughout his career.

An international journey that began in 2015

Saadane earned his first senior Morocco call-up in 2015 but struggled to establish himself amid fierce competition for places in central defence. Despite limited opportunities, he remained on the national team’s radar and was eventually included in Morocco’s preliminary squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Since making his debut, he has earned 14 caps for Morocco, most of them with the national team’s local-based selection. His most recent appearance came during the 2025 Arab Cup, which Morocco went on to win.

Now 34, Saadane’s late call-up to the World Cup represents the fulfillment of a lifelong ambition: competing on football’s biggest stage.
