Marrakech – Morocco’s Ministry of Interior is urging all eligible citizens to complete their voter registration before midnight on Saturday, June 13. The deadline marks the end of an exceptional 30-day revision window for the general electoral lists ahead of the September 23 legislative elections.
The registration drive comes at a critical time. The current electoral rolls count roughly 16.5 million registered voters out of an estimated 28 million eligible citizens – a gap of approximately 12 million unregistered Moroccans.
The vote will renew all 395 seats of the Chamber of Representatives. The official campaign period is set to run from September 10 through midnight on September 22.
In a communiqué, the Interior Ministry called on all citizens who are not yet registered and who are at least 18 years old – or who will turn 18 by September 23 – to submit their applications before the deadline expires. Registration can be completed online through the official electoral portal at www.listeselectorales.ma or in person at local administrative authority offices.
The ministry also addressed citizens who have moved. Those who changed their place of residence outside the commune or district where they are currently registered must file a transfer request within the same deadline. Transfers can be submitted through the same website or at the local authority office covering the new place of residence.
Voters are encouraged to verify whether they are properly registered at their current address. They can do so by sending a free SMS to 2727 or by checking their status on the electoral website. If their names do not appear on the current lists, they must submit a new registration request before the June 13 cutoff.
Citizens who moved within the same commune or district face a separate obligation. They are asked to update their addresses on the electoral list during the same period, either through the online platform or by notifying their local administrative authority directly.
The registration gap has widened since the last elections. The figure of 16.5 million represents a decline from the 17.5 million registered ahead of the September 2021 vote.
Part of that decline reflects the annual revision of the electoral rolls. Only 382,170 new registrations were recorded, while the Interior Ministry removed about 1.4 million entries for legal reasons, chiefly the loss of effective residence in the commune or district of registration, along with duplicate registrations, deaths, and loss of electoral eligibility.
Men currently make up 54% of registered voters, while women account for 46%. Urban voters represent 55% of the electorate, with rural areas making up the remaining 45%.
Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit held meetings with parliamentary party leaders on May 7 and with non-parliamentary parties on May 9 to discuss the registration effort, in a push to broaden participation before the polls. The deadline remains firm: June 13 at midnight.
