Morocco-US Military Cooperation: Canary Islands government pressures Madrid

The Canary Islands government, under the leadership of the Canary Coalition and the Popular Party, is approaching the deepening military ties between Morocco and the United States with caution.

«It is imperative to remain vigilant regarding military actions by a neighboring country,» expressed Manuel Domínguez, vice-president of the Canary Islands administration, in a concerned interview.

«This situation is worrying for Spain, and particularly for the Canary Islands. Spain must not ignore these developments, as demonstrated by the Ceuta incident, which highlighted the government’s apparent lack of interest in Morocco’s maneuvers.»

Domínguez refrained from directly criticizing the Trump administration following the establishment of the African Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC) in Tan-Tan and the first live-fire launch of a cruise missile from the facility.

Instead, he directed his remarks at Rabat. «Morocco won’t stop until its objectives are met: after the Sahara, it’s Ceuta and Melilla next. Spain once enjoyed better international relations with Morocco, but now faces a situation where Morocco senses the weakness of a government overloaded and indifferent to our security. Morocco is capitalizing on this to maximize its gains. Relations with Morocco must evolve towards mutual respect,» he stated.

Manuel Domínguez’s comments come just five days after Cristina Valido, a Canary Coalition MP, raised written queries to Spain’s foreign minister, José Manuel Albares, regarding the strengthening of Morocco-U.S. military relations.
