Morocco top group A despite Senegal stalemate, advance to WAFCON quarterfinals

Morocco’s women’s national team secured top spot in Group A and booked its place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a goalless draw against Senegal on Monday evening at Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat.

Both sides created chances during the first half but lacked the finishing touch, leaving the score level at the break.

Morocco came closest to breaking the deadlock after halftime when it was awarded two consecutive penalties in the 66th and 69th minutes. The first spot kick was ordered to be retaken after Senegal’s goalkeeper was ruled to have stepped off her line before the attempt.

However, Yasmine Mrabet failed to convert either penalty, allowing Senegal to keep the match scoreless.

The Atlas Lionesses pushed for a late winner in the closing stages but were repeatedly denied by Senegal’s disciplined defense, with the match ending 0-0.

The result sees Morocco finish top of Group A with seven points, advancing to the quarterfinals as group winners.

Final Group A standings:

  • Morocco – 7 points
  • Algeria – 6 points
  • Senegal – 4 points
  • Kenya – 0 points

Morocco will now await the identity of its quarterfinal opponent as it continues its bid for a first WAFCON title on home soil.
