Morocco, Senegal Reaffirm Strong Partnership, Commit to Deeper Cooperation

Agadir – Morocco and Senegal have reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening their longstanding bilateral relations, with Senegalese Foreign Minister Cheikh Niang describing the partnership as having a “unique character” in Africa.

Niang made the remarks Saturday following a meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita in Luanda, on the sidelines of the 26th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU).

The Senegalese official described relations between Rabat and Dakar as “deeply bonded,” saying they continue to evolve in line with the expectations and strategic orientations of the two countries’ heads of state.

He also pointed to the “excellent cooperation” between Morocco and Senegal, as well as the longstanding friendship between their peoples, stressing the distinctive nature of their state-to-state relationship on the African continent.

“On all the subjects we discussed, we noted shared points of convergence,” Niang said, according to a statement shared by Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Zero disagreement. This goes to show that this cooperation remains as strong as ever, and we are determined to take it much further,” he added.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the two ministers to discuss a range of bilateral, regional, and continental issues of common interest, while reaffirming their determination to maintain the momentum in relations between Rabat and Dakar.

For his part, Bourita said the meeting reflected the longstanding tradition of consultations between Morocco and Senegal on bilateral, regional, and continental matters.

He said the discussions focused on the “clear guidelines” set by King Mohammed VI and Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, with the aim of keeping the bilateral agenda dynamic and expanding cooperation between the two countries.

“Anything we could do would fall short of what this unique bilateral relationship deserves. No other country in Africa has the kind of relationship that Morocco and Senegal have developed over the decades,” Bourita said.

The Moroccan minister added that the discussions also addressed the roadmap governing bilateral relations and ways to implement it, alongside measures to revitalize the various mechanisms of cooperation between the two countries.

Beyond bilateral matters, Bourita said Morocco and Senegal also discussed their ongoing coordination on developments in the Sahel and Atlantic Africa, as well as other regional and multilateral issues affecting the African continent.

The meeting took place as African Union foreign ministers gathered in Luanda for the bloc’s extraordinary Executive Council session, providing an opportunity for Morocco and Senegal to coordinate positions on issues of shared continental interest.
