Morocco says it thwarted more than 73,000 irregular migration attempts in 2025

Rabat, Sept. 11 (SANA) Moroccan authorities thwarted 73,640 irregular migration attempts in 2025 as the country stepped up efforts to curb migrant smuggling and tighten surveillance along its borders and coastline, official figures showed.

More than 300 migrant-smuggling networks were dismantled during the year, while 13,595 migrants were rescued at sea and provided with medical care, shelter and other assistance, according to figures published by the Moroccan News Agency.

Another 4,372 irregular migrants returned voluntarily to their countries of origin through programs coordinated with their diplomatic missions.

Official figures showed a gradual decline in migrant interceptions in Morocco, despite continued migration pressure across the region and shifts in some routes toward other parts of West Africa and the southern Mediterranean.

In December, the European Union announced an agreement with representatives of the European Parliament on establishing the bloc’s first common list of safe countries of origin, which included Morocco.
