Morocco highlights transitional justice experience at UN rights session

Morocco presented its transitional justice experience in addressing enforced disappearances during an interactive dialogue with the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances at the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council.

The Moroccan delegation highlighted the work of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission, including investigations, witness testimony, public hearings, archive reviews and forensic techniques used to identify victims and clarify unresolved cases. It also pointed to follow-up on the commission’s recommendations and support provided to families seeking to learn the fate of missing relatives.

Morocco said its approach, involving victims, families, public authorities and civil society, was consistent with the Working Group’s view that remembrance is essential to the rights to truth and reparation, as well as guarantees of non-recurrence. The delegation asked how states could make remembrance a lasting foundation for preventing similar violations.
