More than 25,000 Pilgrims Expected at Annual Pilgrimage to St. Anne’s Shrine in Angola

The Catholic Priest explained that the annual pilgrimage has expanded beyond the Diocese of Caxito, attracting faithful from several provinces of Angola as well as pilgrims from other countries.

The increasing number of participants, he noted, requires careful planning in areas such as hospitality, security, transportation, medical assistance, and pastoral care.

“This celebration crosses borders. Pilgrims come not only from the Diocese of Caxito but also from Luanda, Malanje, Uíge, Huambo, Saurimo, other dioceses in Angola, and from abroad,” the Catholic Priest said.

The pilgrimage is the principal annual celebration of the Diocese of Caxito, which is dedicated to St. Anne. According to Fr. Bernardo, the event serves as an important moment of faith, unity, and spiritual renewal for the local Church.

“We are talking about the feast of our Diocese. St. Anne is the Patroness of the Diocese of Caxito, and this celebration occupies a very special place in the life of our local Church. It is a moment of unity and communion for all the faithful,” he said.

Preparations are being coordinated by the Diocesan Events Commission under the guidance of Bishop Maurício Agostinho Camuto. Weekly meetings are being held to oversee the organization of liturgical celebrations, music, logistics, security, and pilgrim reception.

The pilgrimage program is to begin on July 24 with the arrival and reception of pilgrims, followed by an opening Mass presided over by the Superior of the Society of African Missions (SMA). The day is expected to conclude with a night of prayer led by Priests of the Diocese of Caxito.

Organizers have emphasized that spirituality remains at the heart of the pilgrimage. Throughout the three days, pilgrims will participate in Rosary prayers, Eucharistic celebrations, catechesis, Eucharistic adoration, moments of reflection, and opportunities for sacramental confession.

According to Fr. Bernardo, July 25 will be dedicated in a special way to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, allowing pilgrims to experience spiritual renewal and conversion.

“Reconciliation is an essential element of this pilgrimage. We want the faithful to have the opportunity to reconcile with God, with themselves, and with others,” he said.
