A new study by Betway analyzed a survey of 1,201 U.S. adults alongside city-by-city search volume and social conversation around soccer and the World Cup to determine which American metros are primed to become long-term soccer strongholds. The findings reveal what we already know: Miami is a hotbed of soccer enthusiasm.
Miami’s dominance was fueled by an astounding 18.2 million World Cup-related searches—the highest per capita search volume recorded by any American city. The result underscores Miami’s long-standing role as a cultural bridge to soccer-mad Latin America, a connection further supercharged by Inter Miami icon Lionel Messi leading Argentina all the way to the World Cup final.
Atlanta secured second place with the highest total volume of online soccer conversation nationwide—a reflection of Georgia’s elevated fan interest and boosted by the city playing host to eight World Cup matches. New York City finished third, distinguished by an unmatched grassroots foundation of 519 active soccer clubs and organizations, more than double fourth-placed Los Angeles.
According to the study, 38-percent of Americans report being more likely to regularly watch soccer now than before the World Cup, adding to the 8-percent who were already consistent viewers. This marks a major milestone in a market historically dominated by the NFL, NBA and MLB.
But right here in Miami, soccer fever already has strong roots. The city’s mix of international culture, star power and record-setting fan engagement firmly secures its place as a soccer-loving city.
