According to the provincial health division (DPS) in South Kivu, a total of 10,065 cases of measles have been reported in South Kivu province since the beginning of 2026, in just under four months.
The province has also reported 72 deaths- the majority of deaths were recorded in health zones with difficult access, notably the Shabunda health zone with 18 deaths, Kamituga with 12 deaths and also the Kalole and Mulungu health zones.
Head of the office in charge of epidemiological surveillance and health information, Justin Bengehya points out that almost all health zones in South Kivu are experiencing an epidemic, with the exception of certain localities including Minembwe and the Uvira highlands.
He indicates that response measures are underway, including free care and targeted vaccination campaigns.
South Kivu is also battling a cholera outbreak.
