Result: Manchester City 2-1 Southampton
Date: 25 April 2026
Venue: Wembley Stadium
Pep Guardiola opted to give starts to Omar Marmoush, Phil Foden, Tijani Reijnders, Mateo Kovacic and John Stones following last weekend’s win over Arsenal, as Erling Haaland, Bernardo Silva and Nico O’Reilly dropped to the bench.
The Saints had the ball in the back of the net after 11 minutes when Leo Scienza raced clear and calmly slotted past James Trafford, however the celebrations were cut short as the forward was flagged for offside.
City dominated the possession for most of the first half but they struggled to carve out clear-cut chances even with the likes of Rayan Cherki and Foden in the final third, which unfortunately proved to be the trend for the remainder of the first half.
It was more of the same in the second period, which forced Guardiola to make a double change as Foden and Kovacic made way for Savinho and Jeremy Doku to liven up the attack against a Southampton side who were happy to sit back.
The change nearly paid off for the Citizens almost immediately when Savinho picked up a loose ball in the box and unleashed a powerful curling effort that forced Saints goalkeeper Daniel Peretz into a fine save.
City also threw on Haaland and O’Reilly in the final 20 minutes, but it was Southampton who surprisingly got the breakthrough with their first shot on target as Finn Azaz turned brilliantly before firing into the far corner from 20 yards out on 79 minutes.
However, City levelled matters int he 83rd minute when Doku cut in from the left flank and unleashed a powerful strike that took a deflection and sailed into the far corner.
Guardiola’s side completed the turnaround four minutes later when Nico Gonzalez was given time and space to rifle the ball home from around 25 yards out and sealed their spot in the final for a record fourth season in a row, breaking Chelsea’s record of three straight finals.
