Pep Guardiola made one change from the win over Arsenal on Sunday as Rayan Ait-Nouri came in for the injured Rodri, as Nico O’Reilly moved into a midfield role, while Bafana Bafana international Lyle Foster started on the bench for the home side.
The Cityzens got off to the perfect start when Haaland opened the scoring in the fourth minute after turning home a cross from Jeremy Doku and registering his 23rd league goal of the campaign.
The visitors continued pushing for more goals as O’Reilly went close after 25 minutes with a powerful header that forced goalkeeper Martin Dubravka into a superb save, before he pulled off another good save to thwart Rayan Cherki minutes later.
Burnley, meanwhile, did have a couple glimpses at goal as the first half went as they managed to get behind the City defence but they were let down by their finishing, with Zian Flemming passing up a couple good chances in the 18-yard area.
Guardiola’s charges came out firing in the second half and they nearly got a second goal ten minutes when in Haaland latched onto a loose ball in the box but ended up sending his low strike against the upright with Dubravka well-beaten.
Burnley coach Scott Parker finally introduced Lyle Foster in the 71st minute, with the South African forward replacing French forward Loum Tchaouna for the final 20 minutes of the second half looking to keep their survival hopes alive for another week.
City, however, were able to see out the late push from Parker’s charges in the closing stages of the second half to claim the victory, as they leapfrog Arsenal into top spot while Burnley have been relegated with four games to spare.
