Magnitude 6.0 earthquake hits Gulf of Aden between Somalia and Yemen, USGS says

Mogadishu (HOL) — A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Friday morning in the Gulf of Aden between Somalia and Yemen, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The shallow quake occurred at 12:07 a.m. local time, or 2107 GMT Thursday, about 145 kilometers off the Somali coast, according to the USGS.

The agency estimated the quake’s intensity at IV on the Mercalli intensity scale, meaning shaking could have been felt indoors and may have awakened some residents.

At that level of intensity, dishes, windows and doors may rattle, walls may make cracking sounds and heavy objects may be felt striking buildings. Parked vehicles may also rock noticeably.

Earthquakes above magnitude 6.0 are uncommon in and around Somalia, making a quake of this size rare and significant for the region, officials said.

There were no immediate reports of damage, injuries or deaths.
