Magesi FC moved top of the promotion/relegation play-off table after defeating Cape Town City 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Fixture: Magesi v Cape Town City
Score: 2-0
Goalscorers: Vandala (34′), Chirambadare (68′)
The Citizens came into the clash knowing victory was the only order of the day after they lost 1-0 to Milford FC in their play-off opener on Wednesday afternoon. Magesi, meanwhile, managed to secure a vital win over Richards Bay last week to ensure they move to the play-offs and avoid automatic relegation.
The Citizens enjoy most of the possession in the early stages and with the inclusion of veteran winger Keagan Dolly had a lot more quality in the final third, as the former Kaizer Chiefs winger was denied by Magesi goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze in the opening 15 minutes.
However, City were undone on 33 minutes just as they were against Milford a few days ago after conceding a penalty when Mtshali was deemed to have been fouled by Cayden Fortune in the box. Mcedi Vandala stepped up and calmly slotted home to hand Magesi the lead.
The Cityzens unsurprisingly went into the break unhappy with the score, especially as Magesi had barely threatened goalkeeper Mickey van der Hart throughout the opening 45 minutes while they did look lively at the other end of the pitch.
The visitors responded before the hour mark in an attempt to back in the contest as teenager Emile Witbooi was introduced in place of Alifeyo Ziba, as coach Jan Vreman withdrew a defender to add more numbers to the attack.
However, the situation did not get better for the visitors as Magesi doubled their lead in the 67th minute when a swift counter-attack ended with Edmore Chirambadare firing past Van der Hart, who had initially did well to save Vandala’s shot.
There would be no happy ending for City as they also finished the game with 10 players as substitute Kayden Francis was given a straight red card for dissent late in the contest.
Key Performers:
Vandala proved to be a thorn for the City defence throughout the encounter with some lovely runs from the right flank. The attacker scored the opening goal from the penalty spot and played a big role in the second goal.
Chirambadare was lucky not to see a straight red card in the first half, but he became a real threat when he was move from midfield to the flank, which also resulted in him getting a goal.
