Luis Diaz Wins German Supercup
Colombia’s Luis Diaz begins the 2026-27 season with another title as Bayern Munich beats Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on Aug. 22 to win the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup at Signal Iduna Park. Nathaniel Brown and Michael Olise score for Bayern, while Fábio Silva pulls one back for Dortmund in the second half.
The victory gives Diaz his fourth title with Bayern Munich since he joined the club in July 2025. He has now won the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and two Franz Beckenbauer Supercups with the German side.
Diaz starts the season in Bayern’s attack
Diaz starts on the left side of Bayern’s attack, with Olise on the opposite flank and Harry Kane as the central forward. The Colombian does not score, but he creates one of Bayern’s better chances before halftime.
In the 35th minute, Diaz cuts inside from the left and sends a shot toward the far post. Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel stops the attempt. Bayern takes the lead in the 28th minute. A loose ball falls to Brown following Olise’s run, and the defender finishes from inside the area.
Olise doubles the advantage in first-half stoppage time. The French winger finishes to give Bayern a 2-0 lead at the break. Dortmund responds after halftime. Fábio Silva reduces the deficit in the 75th minute after Daniel Svensson sends the ball into the area.
The hosts push for an equalizer, but Bayern holds on. Dortmund’s task becomes harder in stoppage time when Ramy Bensebaini receives a red card.
The result gives Bayern another victory over Dortmund in the rivalry and starts its new campaign with a trophy already secured.
Bayern adds another German trophy
The Franz Beckenbauer Supercup pits the previous season’s Bundesliga champion against the DFB-Pokal winner. Bayern qualifies after winning both competitions in 2025-26.
The DFB-Pokal is Germany’s primary domestic cup competition. The tournament uses a knockout format and includes 64 teams from across the German football system. Bayern won the 2025-26 DFB-Pokal after beating VfB Stuttgart 3-0 in the final on May 23. The club also claimed the Bundesliga title, completing the domestic double.
The Supercup adds another trophy to that previous-season success. Bayern also won the 2025 edition, beating Stuttgart 2-1. For Diaz, the victory means he has won the German Supercup in both of his seasons with Bayern. He netted Bayern’s second goal in the 2025 final, heading home in a 2–1 victory over Stuttgart.
Diaz collects his fourth Bayern title
Diaz joined Bayern in July 2025 after three and a half seasons with Liverpool. His career already included major domestic trophies in Colombia, Portugal and England.
Diaz won two Colombian league titles, a Copa Colombia, and a Superliga during his tenure with Atlético Junior. His first league title came in the 2018 Torneo Finalización, followed by the 2019 Torneo Apertura. He also won the Copa Colombia in 2017 and the Superliga in 2019.
Diaz moved to Porto in 2019 and won two Primeira Liga titles, the Portuguese Cup and the Portuguese Super Cup. His performances in Portugal eventually led to his January 2022 move to Liverpool.
In England, Diaz won the FA Cup and the Community Shield before adding the League Cup twice and the Premier League. His Liverpool trophy collection therefore included five major domestic honors.
Since joining Bayern, he has lifted four domestic trophies: back-to-back Franz Beckenbauer Supercups in 2025 and 2026, as well as a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in the 2025–26 campaign. The first of those trophies came only weeks after he arrived in Germany. Diaz scored against Stuttgart in the 2025 Supercup, helping his new club start his Bayern career with silverware.
A year later, he starts his second season with another Supercup victory, although he leaves Dortmund without a goal.
Diaz begins another Bundesliga campaign
The Supercup gives Bayern its first title of the 2026-27 campaign, but the club’s main domestic objective now shifts to the Bundesliga.
Diaz starts the new season as one of Vincent Kompany’s attacking options alongside Kane and Olise. Against Dortmund, he remains involved in Bayern’s attacking play and tests Kobel before halftime.
His expanded role builds on a standout first year in Munich, during which he helped guide Bayern to both major domestic titles. His second campaign now begins with another title and a starting place in the first competitive match.
Bayern will next focus on the Bundesliga, where it starts the defense of its league title. Diaz enters that campaign with four Bayern trophies in just over a year, adding another German honor to a career that already includes league and cup titles in three countries.
