Congo Town, Monrovia—The Liberia Special Economic Zones Authority (LSEZA) has pledged to transform the nation into a leading regional trade hub, unveiling an ambitious agenda to drive job creation and investment through the development of strategic economic zones.
Speaking at a media symposium on Thursday, LSEZA Director of Administration Ms. Hattie W. Thunder highlighted Liberia’s abundant natural resources, strategic coastal location, and resilient population.
However, Ms. Thunder acknowledged that Liberia has yet to fully harness these advantages. She emphasized that the LSEZA was created to change this narrative, noting that Special Economic Zones are proven engines of growth across Africa and globally.
She further explained that the LSEZA offers investors incentives, modern infrastructure, and streamlined processes to build industries, create jobs, and expand trade—marking a bold step toward industrialization and prosperity in Liberia.
Reiterating the plan, Ms. Thunder identified five key economic zones: the Monrovia Free Zone, Roberts International Airport, Buchanan Agri-Processing Zone, Mesurrado Fishing Pier, and the Monrovia Industrial Park.
She explained that the Monrovia Free Zone, located near the Freeport, will serve as a hub for logistics, warehousing, and light manufacturing. The Buchanan Agri-Processing Zone will enable farmers and agribusinesses to transform local crops—including rice, cassava, cocoa, and palm oil—into value-added export products.
The Roberts International Airport Zone, she added, will unlock opportunities in aviation services, assembly plants, and residential development. Meanwhile, the Mesurrado Fishing Pier and Monrovia Industrial Park—currently managed by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry—will further support industrial growth.
“Together, these zones are not just projects—they are platforms for job creation, innovation, and global partnerships,” she said. “Imagine a Liberia where thousands of young people are employed in modern factories, producing goods ‘Made in Liberia.’ Imagine farmers supplying thriving agro-industries instead of selling raw crops at low prices. Imagine Liberia as a trade hub serving over 400 million consumers across West Africa.”
She emphasized that this is the vision of the LSEZA: to unlock opportunities, attract investment, and build a strong future for Liberia.
However, she stressed that achieving this vision requires the involvement of the media, which serves as storytellers, guardians of truth, and a vital bridge between the institution and the public.
“Your reporting will help citizens understand how Special Economic Zones benefit their daily lives. Often, we speak in technical terms on the radio, but what the Liberian people truly want to know is how these changes affect them as individuals and communities. That is your mission.
Your headlines can inspire investor confidence; your investigations will ensure transparency and accountability. In short, you are not just bystanders or watchdogs—you are co-authors of Liberia’s economic transformation,” she concluded.
