That collapse cost India their world No. 1 ranking, prompted a BCCI review, and left Shreyas Iyer without a single win in two series as captain. The scrutiny on his leadership has grown steadily louder with each defeat.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s series opener, however, the captain struck a notably upbeat tone. In a video shared by the BCCI on X under the caption “Ready to get going in Harare”, Iyer insisted the England tour had value despite the results.

Iyer refuses to dwell on the defeats

The captain began by talking about the setting itself before addressing the elephant in the room head-on and framing the tour as a learning exercise rather than a failure. “First and foremost, excited to be here. This is my first time in Zimbabwe and Harare. The weather looks beautiful, the people look happy, so looking forward to an exciting series over here,” Iyer said.

He then turned to England without attempting to soften what happened. “Yes, definitely. We had a rough patch in England, but a lot of positives came out of that. We got to know what we have to build as a team going forward. What kind of presence of mind, awareness and adaptability we need.”

Iyer also acknowledged the inexperience within a heavily rotated squad. “Once we step onto the field again, this is going to be a great challenge for us. Some of us are playing for the first time, so the quicker we adapt, the better result we will be getting,” he added.

That squad includes maiden call-ups for Yash Thakur and Ashok Sharma, with Harsh Dubey and Prabhsimran Singh also awaiting debuts. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi returns after being dropped for the final T20I at Southampton.

The positives are real, but the results have to follow

Iyer is not simply spinning defeat. Tilak Varma made a similar point last week about India having played almost exclusively in Asia for two years before being asked to handle pace and bounce in Ireland and England.

The problem is that Zimbabwe offers no cover. This is a side ranked well below India, playing on surfaces that suit subcontinental batters, and there is no absent Jasprit Bumrah to explain away a third consecutive series defeat.

The ranking consequences sharpen it further. India’s automatic qualification for the 2028 Olympics depends on finishing as Asia’s top-ranked side on December 31, and losing points to Zimbabwe would open a door for Pakistan that should never have been ajar.
