Reds opted to start Alexander Isak and Bradley Barcola on the bench as Cody Gakpo led the line, while the Blues brought in Danny Welbeck, Romeo Lavia and Malo Gusto.

It took a while for the game to get going, but the visitors got the breakthrough in the 40th minute when Morgan Rogers converted a penalty.

Liverpool, however, got back on level terms three minutes later with a penalty of their own, as Gakpo duly dispatched from 12 yards.

That proved to be the final goal of the clash, as penalties were needed to separate the two sides, with the Reds going all the way to sudden death to triumph 6-5.

The visitor broke the deadlock on 30 minutes courtesy of a strike from Ivory Coast international Malick Yalcouye.

Enzo Maresca’s charges brought themselves level ten minutes later, with Mateo Kovacic getting his first goal of the season after being set up by Phil Foden.

The Seagulls restored their advantage two minutes after the halftime break through Georginio Rutter, who bagged his third goal of the campaign.

However, the home side were able to pull level after the 70-minute mark as defender Vitor Reis nodded a cross from Rayan Cherki, which ultimately sent the game to penalties.

City were able to get the job done in the shoot-out, with Brighton missing two of their spot-kicks.
