At least seven people were killed and 20 others wounded Sunday in a Houthi drone and missile attack on the strategic port of Mokha near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a Yemeni government military source said.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media, said the dead included three civilians and four military personnel who were at the port.
The attack targeted the civilian commercial port and nearby residential buildings, the source said.
Earlier Sunday, a statement from a Houthi military spokesman said Saudis were among those killed and said the attack destroyed equipment and weapons.
Fayyad al-Nuaman, assistant undersecretary at Yemen’s Ministry of Information, said the strike caused damage to the port’s buildings and dock.
An unofficial cease-fire has largely held in Yemen since 2022, but concern is growing that the civil war could flare again after days of attacks by both sides.
In a separate claim Sunday, the Iran-backed Houthis said they had attacked a Saudi Aramco refinery in an escalation of tensions with Saudi Arabia.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the drone attack on the facility in Jazan, in southwestern Saudi Arabia, was a “precise hit.” He said the attack was in response to what he called Saudi airspace violations over the Yemeni provinces of Saada and Hajjah by drones.
The Saudi Ministry of Energy said firefighting teams extinguished a blaze that broke out at dawn at an Aramco refinery facility in Jazan and that there were no casualties. The ministry did not say what caused the fire.
Tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, which supports Yemen’s internationally recognized government, have risen in recent weeks, with Saudi airstrikes targeting the Houthi-held capital, Sanaa.
